I am providing my study notes from the “How to Protect Your Family from Colds and Flu Using Essential Oils”  I took from the AromaHead Institute. A lot of useful information and I thought you could glean some from my notes. If you have questions please let me know, and I will do my best to help.

Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus)
Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis)
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
Frankincense (Boswellia cartreii)
with several alternative oils for each

The therapeutic properties and safety of an Essential Oil are determined by the make of its components. An oil can have for 1-400 different components

Synergy is the interaction of the components of the oils to make stronger therapeutic uses


Healing Properties come from the Whole Oil

Eucalyptus globulus:  NOT for use with small children Substitute with Cedarwood


  • Diffusing to reduce germs
  • Prevent cold & flu
  • Clears Sinus Congestion
  • Calming sinus or tension related headaches
  • Reducing muscle aches & pains

Made of about 70% 1,8-cineole

Research on 1,8-cineole:

  • Airborne Antimicrobial
  • Reduces Viruses
  • Reduces Congestion & Coughing
  • Eases Swelling
  • Clams Aches & Pains

Other Oils High in  1, 8 cineole:

  • Eucalyptus Radiata
  • Cajeput (Melaleuca leucadendron var. cajupit)
  • Ravintsara (Ho Leaf) (Cinnamomum camphor ct. 1,8 cineole)
  • Saro (Cinnamomum fragraus)

Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis):Orange

  • Diffusing for its uplifting aroma
  • Preventing cold & flu by supporting immunity
  • Soothing muscle aches associated with colds
  • Reduces nausea
  • Stress reduction

Consists of about 95% (+)- limonene
(also known as d-limonene)

Researched properties of d-limonene:

  • Activates white blood cells
  • Immune stimulant
  • Reduces swelling
  • Clams aches & pains

Other oil high in d-limonene:

  • Lemon (Citrus limon) up to 12 drops per oz is NOT phototoxic
  • Grapefruit (Citrus paradise) up 24 drops per oz is NOT phototoxic
  • Distilled Lime is NOT phototoxic, NOTE: Cold Pressed Lime is VERY Phototoxic
  • Blood Orange, Wild Orange, Mandarin, & Tangerine are NOT phototoxic
  • All Orange oils are substitutes for each other
  • Bergamont is VERY Phototoxic

         Eucalyptus and Lavender together bring a fresh, penetrating medicinal aroma (Eucalyptus) with Lavender’s lovely fresh, light, floral, woody aroma. The combination is fabulous.

  • Bergamot Mint (Mentha-Citrata)
  • Neroli/Petitgrain Co-Distill (Citrus Aurantium Var. Amara)
  • Linaloe Berry (Bussera delpechiana)
  • Basil ct. Linaolol (Ocimum basilicum ct. linalool)
  • Thyme ct. Linalol (Thymus vulgaris ct. linalool)

Tea Tree

Tea Tree (Melaleuca alterfolia)

  • Immune Stimulating against viruses
  • Reducing Viruses & Bacteria
  • Reduces swelling in sinuses
  • Reduces sinus congestion

Main Component Terpinen-4-ol Properties:

  • Immune Support
  • Activates White Blood Cells
  • Reduces Various Viruses, Bacteria, & Fungi
  • Calms Histamine
  • Calms Muscle Spasms

Substitutes For Tea Tree (Melaleuca alterfiolia)

—  Sweet Marjoram (Origanum majurana)
—  Plai (Zingiben cassununar)
